DotNetNuke

DotNetNuke or DNN for short is an open-sourced web application framework used for creating websites. The capabilities of DotNetNuke do go beyond the ability to make web sites but in this article we will focus mainly on how it can be used to develop and manage a website.

Due to being an open-source product DotNetNuke is a free product that is distributed without cost over the Internet. The developers of DotNetNuke require only that some form of credit be given to them by users of their product, usually in the form of a link to their main website.

DotNetNuke can be used to create any kind of web page without the user needing to know a lot of scripting or code. Due to DNN's open source nature it has attracted a large number of dedicated users who are glad to answer questions and help new users.

How It Works

Understanding DotNetNuke and how it is used is important when considering if it is the right product for you and it is important to know both the features and limitations of DotNetNuke before you begin.

DotNetNuke does not work in Linux Web Hosting environments because it uses ASP coding to operate. As stated previously you do not need to know how to write code in order to use DotNetNuke but the coding in the product itself is ASP based. ASP is only supported by Windows based hosting providers.

You do not need to install DotNetNuke on your local computer but it will need to be installed in a directory on your website. Exactly how it is installed will vary depending on the hosting provider’s policies. In some cases you may be asked to install it yourself, while in others it may be done automatically through a control panel. It is also possible that you may have to submit an email to your hosting provider requesting one of their staff members do the installation for you.

Once the installation of DotNetNuke is complete you simply need to go to the URL of your installation (ie yoursite.com or yoursite/dnnsubfolder . com) and you will find a basic default template design and be prompted for a login. The user name and password for your DotNetNuke site should have been provided to you if you did not do the installation yourself. After you login with administrative credentials you will then be shown a menu at the top of your site that is visible only to you and it is through this menu that you can begin creating content and pages for your site.

DotNetNuke is a powerful and versatile method of creating a website and the default installation includes a large number of features and the option to add hundreds more through modules and updates available all over the Internet.
